Wall Street Occupied by Unemployed Man and Friends on Halloween Unemployed Man, Krug Man, Captain Generica, Wonder Mother and Master of Degrees faced off against the money-sucking Slotbot 3000 and its wheel of doom in New York City yesterday amid the Occupy protests on Wall Street. Leading the demonstration was month-long Wall Street occupier Gan Golan who co-created The Adventures of Unemployed Man, an 80-page political satire comic that debuted just more than a year ago, with Erich Origen. The comic includes art by Ramona Fradon, Rick Veitch, Michael Netzer, Terry Beatty, Josef Rubenstein, Benton Jew, Thomas Yeates, Shawn Martinbrough, Clem Robins, Tom Orzechowski, Thomas Mauer and Lee Loughridge. The Adventures of Unemployed Man casts a former corporate fat cat as a struggling superhero who must now overcome the forces that had previously kept him wealthy just to stay afloat. Social and political concepts are personified by retro (roughly Golden/Silver Age) style costumed heroes and villains, although the story doesn’t necessarily have what’s considered a traditional superhero comic ending.While the demonstration certainly serves as something of a promotion for Golan and Origen’s work (they reportedly have a political parody children’s book in the pipeline for a summer release and are in talks for an Unemployed Man television show), their involvement at Occupy Wall Street is consistent with many of the messages of their book. The duo is pretty forthcoming about the expenses of their Unemployed Man outings in their interview with Wired, revealing the UM costume was obtained for around $200 from a fetish site and that they have worked their way into conventions like WonderCon on the cheap.
